Today I am grateful:

May 1, 2013

That my daughter is joy,
not a loss in status.
That if I die, she will not
be on the streets.
That she does not have to
clean another family’s house
or eat anyone’s scraps.
That when I left my religion
there was no retaliation.
That clean water spurts from our faucet.
That my body is mine
and hers is hers
and no one can sell us,
marry us off, or take away our names.
For the things I take for granted,
today I am grateful.
