Pink gifts

June 18, 2011

She brushed me with
the sweetest petals of motherhood
today.
Her arms flung around my neck,
kisses were stamped on my cheek,
and she crowed:
Mommy, I love you so much
I don’t even have the word,
even more than you can imagine!

It’s mutual.
As were the damp starry eyelashes.

Wild woman,
wistful wishes
willful winds,
winsome wisps,
worry, worship, won’t.
We had them all today.

Sachets

Did you know
that a car seat will hold
a lavender plant just as well
as it holds a daughter?
Precious lovely things
all tucked in safe and
soothing.

Nothing would please.
Holes in the tights.
Braids too tight.
We forgot her snack.
But worst of all:
Mommmmm!!!! Listen to me!!!
I’m too dehygerated, I just
CAN’T STAND IT, Mom!

I concentrated on keeping my breathing
slow and steady.
Things were quiet for a minute. Then,
Mom?
What’s dehygerated?

Last night I tangled with the internet gods,
and they won.
Specifically, they kicked my ass
all around the ether.
Luckily, I have a superhero
living under my roof.

Don’t be fooled

There’s a whole lotta
lotta
going on in there.

Settled

Funny how things sometimes
fall into place.
Never looks quite the way
I expect,
and yet at the same time
it’s just the way I’d imagined.

My little woman

February 6, 2011

It’s hard for a four-year-old
to keep track of the four
Little Women.
Is that Beth what burned the book?
No, that’s Amy.
Who’s that girl? That’s Jo.
Why is her hair long again? It just is.
Is that Meg who died? No.
Is that Jo? No, that’s Teddy.
But her biggest critique:
Why aren’t they showing us the babies again?
Why are they only showing us this boring stuff?

Wait till I try to read it to her.

Debrief

November 23, 2010

All I can really do
is let go of the fantasy
of the mother I’d hoped to be
and try to have compassion
on this woman who
lives in my shoes and who is
so tired
and is not measuring up
but is doing
her damnedest.
It’s harder than anything
else, some days.

Birthday celebrations continue

November 21, 2010

I have already received
many beautiful and
lovely gifts,
but the best of them all
was handed to me with the words,
Let me tell you what it says, Mommy.
It says, To Mommy, love with
so much love
love, love, love,
from me.
